Anthony Bourdain came to Australia a few years ago and I was luckily enough to see one of his shows. He was so charismatic and lit up the room. His words were full of hope, joy and inspiration. So sad he’s gone.
There is a lot of darkness around this so called ‘suicide’ and I am actually beginning to wonder if he was not murdered… Realistically, it does not make sense for an ex-junkie to hang himself, for one thing. He was so outspoken and no doubt had some enemies. At any rate, it is a tremendous loss.
Ohhh, thank you so much! All suicides are creepy/ upsetting to me, but I think it is even more upsetting when they have these seemingly perfect lives… I loved Curt and many of the others. Thanks so much for following! 🙂
Yes, suicides are pretty sad, they’re like a biggg question mark on all of us. Totally agreed. But, “seemingly” perfect, what’s going on in there, no one knows.

The last part was, I think, added by Susan M Schultz, American poet, critic, publisher and English professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. It’s just something which I ran into, and held onto, as a reminder to exercise caution in my own “people-reading”, and encountering the demons of others
I found this post very moving and powerful. I am only really familiar with one of the people pictured – Kurt Cobain. Kurt was an unbelievably beautiful man so I guess in that sense we could say he had a perfect exterior but unfortunately it was all too clear that he was full of anguish and pain so I’m not sure if we could really say that his demons were lurking beneath the surface. One of the things I really admired about him is that he didn’t try to hide his pain – he didn’t try to deceive people into thinking he was fine but rather was brutally honest about his struggles. To me that makes him a huge inspiration and someone of real integrity. Your post illustrates beautifully the power of language. In just six words you have forced us to confront something desperately sad and harrowing yet also somehow comforting – that to people for whom life becomes unbearable death offers a way out, a promise of an end to all the pain.

Still, his suicide was a huge surprise, and even now, some people still think he may have been murdered. I think I write this post around the time of Anthony Bourdain’s suicide, and I just could not believe that someone with such a seemingly perfect life could end it. Very sad. I loved his thoughts on travel too. He just seemed to get so much out of everything he did. Makes what happened so difficult to understand.
