“Stay afraid, but do it anyway. What’s important is the action. You don’t have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow.” — Carrie Fisher
There are very few celebrity deaths that bring me to tears, but this one did.
I will always love Carrie/ Leia — a badass girl who, in dangerous situations proved herself to be no damsel in distress. She brought a new paradigm for the traditional fairy tale princess. Even Disney took a clue. After Leia came the likes of Asian warrior Mulan, along with the super-smart Belle, Scottish Brave-girl Merida, ice queen Elsa and the wounded but loving Malificent. They were all radicals who cared more about helping their families and contributing to society’s greater good than they did about ball gowns, riches and marrying handsome princes. Gone were the sleeping beauties, in were the new feminists. Princess Leia set an important precedent.
To me, Carrie and Princess Leia are forever intertwined. Carrie pulled off the role splendidly, and spoke to generations of girls. In real life she was a warrior too, defying conventions and taking on the taboos of addiction and mental illness. Her books were bittersweet, tragically hilarious. Carrie Fisher was a brave, funny, frank and fantastic woman.
Star Wars may be fiction, but to many of us it is very real. The Force is forever with us. There are psychological/ Jungian/ collective subconscious reasons for its popularity. Deep within the human psyche lurks a longing for the righteousness of myth.
Just ask the late great Joseph Campbell, a professor of mythology who spent a good deal of time on George Lucas’ ranch. He’ll give you an earful! Here is a short sample:
Some great Carrie moments that sum it all up:
Farewell sweet princess, you will not be forgotten. We will look for you among the stars, the Pleiades and Milky Way, walking the sky and mining the truth as you are wont to do.
This has been a hard year for losing talented people.

News of her heart attack brought me to tears. I had hoped that she would somehow recover. It’s like losing a piece of my childhood.

I was brought to tears also. We discussed her at Christmas dinner, two generations of my family are MAJOR, long term Star Wars fans. But we had heard she was in stable condition. I did not think she would die. Then the news today. I broke down.

Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia was one of the first portraits I ever made. I was only teenager when I saw the movie and she was definitely one of my first crushes. If I find my portrait I will post it.

Oh yes, Paul you should post that portrait! Many boys had crushes, many girls wanted to BE her, and Princess Leia rocked generations. We are very upset, my whole family are fans.

I will be glad to leave 2016 in my rear view mirror. George Michael and Carrie Fisher passing in the same week, so sad. I saw the original Star Wars opening night at the theaters in the Galleria in Houston, Texas many moons ago. I was so delighted to see something that we all hoped would last generations. Carrie’s artistic gifts/talent as well as her honesty and openness was quite rare among celebrities who reluctantly are thrown into the limelight. Enjoyed reading your blog and will follow as best as I can. pEaCe

Thank you so much! Her death is indeed a great loss to us, along with GM and the many other talented people who have left us this year. What I remember most about Star Wars was the amazing feeling it left us with, and Carrie’s top notch performance.
Thanks so much for reading and following! I wish you a superb 2017 🙂

Beautiful tribute to an awesome woman. This is one of the 2016 deaths that really hurts. And now her mother has passed away a day later.
Can’t wait for this year to end.

What a beautiful tribute! Princess Leia was such great role model and so was Carrie; she lived her life fearlessly. And now her mother gone as well. 😦
