Love Alone

What was the mystical allure of Wallis Simpson?

It was eighty years ago, on December 10, 1936 that King Edward VIII of England announced his abdication of the throne. He gave up the most powerful position in the world in order to marry the love of his life, Wallis Simpson.  Wallis was  forbidden fruit, a twice divorced,  free-living American socialite who could never be an appropriate wife for a king. Edward gave up a kingdom for her.

Jamaican musician Harry Belafonte wrote the song ‘Love Alone’, which told the story of Edward and Wallis to a Calypso beat. Hope you like it!

Everyone wants a Wallis – tantalizingly off limits, high probability of annoying your family, extremely likely to keep you from being asked to attend all those pesky royalty charity gigs. I get it. 😉

  3. Wow, I never knew about this! Thats beautiful! Goes to show how strong love is! And that Belafonte track is dangerously catchy. The fact that it is short and sweet makes it a perfect candidate for an earworm! Now it’ll be stuck in my head all day lol.

    Great piece Christine!

    • Thanks Darryl, glad you liked it! I knew the song before I knew the actual story — my parents played Belafonte records, so I heard this all the time growing up. Still know it by heart haha, it is catchy. It is a nice story, a powerful nod to true love.
