Could Queen Elizabeth I, who was in many ways a force of nature herself, actually command the elements?
Here is a scene from one of my favorite movies Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Queen Bess confronts her ambassadors about impending war with Spain. As it turned out, Bess did command the wind — she had the last laugh when fierce hurricane-like gusts actually overtook the Spanish Armada, bringing victory to England.
Was Bess a witch? You decide 🙂

Ah, we must really have the same taste in actors! Cate is my favorite. I love how she, an Australian, can do every imaginable accent. Blue Jasmine was great 🙂

The Virgin Queen may not have been a witch, but she did employ Dr John Dee, mathematician, cartographer, alchemist, magician and the person who coined the phrase ‘British Empire’.

Yes, she certainly did! Dee later suffered some backlash for his alchemy and messing with the occult 🙂

Thanks for sending the link! It is really fascinating stuff. I like John Dee — it seems to me Elizabeth’s administration was kinder to him than James’. At any rate, I guess the world was not quite ready for his brand of mysticism!

Well James wasn’t a fun loving guy. I like Dee as well.

James, ugh! It was he who instigated so many witch hunts and scares, passing stricter laws etc. John Dee could NEVER have been his adviser, polar opposites I think 🙂

Indeed, never a fan of James.

This made me think of Count Dracula and how he commands the wind. I wonder if Stoker was thinking of Queen Bess when he wrote Dracula 🙂

Hmmm very possibly. Her influence lasted! Although Bess did have a somewhat difficult relationship with the Irish 🙂

Oh yes! I forgot about the Irish issue 🙂

Bram Stoker was a super imaginative guy. It’s a shame he never got his proper kudos for Dracula!

If only he knew how influential Dracula would be. Or maybe he does 🙂

Oh yeah, he does 🙂 In my world he does. He is now somewhere playing with your Tarot deck… 🙂
